Back in 2024, Rivian announced R2. Under the R1 lineup, it's a smaller and more affordable crossover slot. It's hard to overstate how important R2 is to American startups. Mid size Suvs are one of the most popular segments in the United States and everywhere else, and our market is prepared for a really great electric entry. When the R2 was first revealed, Rivian said it would exceed the 300-mile range, start at 445,000 and go into production in the first half of 2026. Of course, in 2024 the automaker was presenting only prototypes and preliminary figures, and it was still doing tests worth years, and we all learned to be vigilant about the promises of this industry. Rivian is ready to share (almost) all of the specifications and details of R2. And you will not know it, Rivian seems to have fulfilled its promise. The R2 has a maximum range of 345 miles, the base model starts at less than $47,000, and the first customers will get an Suv in the coming months. R2 can be ordered now, and Rivian says shipping will start already in the spring.
First, let's talk about the dual motor performance model, which will be the first model to reach customers this spring. Rivian says it has 656 horsepower and 609 pound-feet of torque, slightly lower than the performance of the dual-motor R1S and reaches 3.6 miles in just 60 seconds. It's slower than Rivian's initial claim of less than 3 seconds, but almost certainly there will be a tri-motor R2X model down the line. The estimated range of Epa-R2 performance is up to 330 miles, and if the launch package is included, it will be offered at destination 59,485, including the destination fee of destination 1,495. The dual-motor Premium, which will be launched later this year, performs at 450 horsepower and 537lb-ft, and is the second slowest to 60 mph at 2 mph. Also, the EPA's range is 330 miles, with a starting price of $55,485.
In the early 2027 (as the 2028 model), you can get a rear-wheel drive standard with a single motor that outputs 350 horsepower and 355 lb-ft, sending the R2 to 5.9 mph in 60 seconds. That's what you want for the longest range, Rivian estimates it gets up to 345 miles from charging. The R2 standard comes just under fifty Grand, costing costing49,985 including destinations. These 3 models all share the same 87.9 kWh battery pack, but in late 2027 Rivian will add a 4th R2 trim. There are no details yet on the pack, but its motor power and acceleration performance are the same as the long-range standard model, and it still has a range of more than 275 miles. All 4 versions of the R2 have NACS ports on the left rear quarter panel (it comes with a ccs adapter, so don't worry). We don't know the maximum fast charging capability, but Rivian says the R2 will go from 30% to 10% within 80 minutes.

Every power train setup is offered with a tow package that allows the R2 to tow up to 4,400 pounds. Coincidentally, that means the R2 can tow almost another R2. Rivian says that while certain numbers are not yet available, they weigh about 2,000 pounds less than the R4,600S. Instead of sharing the R1 platform, R2 is built on the new architecture that underpins R3.So, power train aside, what do you get for your money? The R2 standard is equipped with 19-inch wheels, 12-way power driver's seat with lumbar, 8-way power passenger seat, heated front seat and heated steering wheel, 525w sound system, 5 speakers and 2 midwoofers. The Livian Autonomy + Hands-free Level 2 driver Assist system is optional in all R2 for either 49.99 per month or one 2,500 one-time charges, all new R2 gets a free 60-day trial of it.
In all-terrain drive mode, 20-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights and highly adaptable beams, dad drop-down liftgate glass integrated traction hook, the interior of the local color Qiang is birch wood trim, soft fiber, ventilated front seat, heated outboard motor seat, flashlight after driving passenger seat for 12 direction adjustment of bar door, 975W 9 speakers of premium audio system, 2 mid woofers 2 sub woofers. Finally, the performance is 21-inch wheels, semi-active suspension, compass yellow brake calipers and badges, and some more De Oh, too, start control mode. Available in performance, ostensibly only for the first year (although Rivian just calls it a "limited edition"), it's a launch package. It includes the option of getting rivian green a traction package, autonomy+, anodized key fob for life, and launch green paint.
Speaking of paint, the only color that is a free option is Escar silver. The R2 standard is also available in forest green, glacier white, half-moon grey and midnight, while the premium can have on them with the beautiful Catalina Cove blue. But easily the best R2 color is Borealis, metallic purple that is only offered in performance. Sadly, there are only 2 interior color schemes, either black craters or off-white of coastal clouds. There are 4 wheel designs, and one of the 20-inch options is wrapped in BF Goodrich All terrain tires (the rest wear Pirelli Seasons). The design of the production R2 is exactly the same as what we saw two years ago in the form of a prototype, but now it has all the dimensions. The R2 is 185.9 inches long, 75.0 inches wide and 66.9 inches high, which is 14.9 inches shorter in length, 4.3 inches narrower and 10.4 inches shorter in height than the R1S, and its 115.6-inch wheelbase is 5.5 inches shorter than the R1's. Every R2 has 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a tenth more than the new Subaru Outback Wilderness, and it can handle a water play depth of 19.7 inches, but unlike the R1 model there is no height-adjustable suspension.

Installing the rear seats gives you 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This, Rivian says, is enough for 2 oversized check suitcases, plus some backpacks and strollers, and under the loading floor there is extra space to fit the carry-on suitcase. It folds the second row seat completely flat and its space expands to 79.4 cubic feet, and Rivian appears to sell mattress pad accessories to take advantage of it. The 5.2 cubic foot frunk can fit six food product bags or carry-on suitcases and backpacks and also gets 2 gloveboxes inside, 1 in a typical spot and another under the central screen. According to Rivian, there is a class-leading interior room and there is no full specification, but the automaker says it has 40.9 inches in the front, 40.4 inches in the rear, 41.4 inches in the front leg room and 40.4 inches in the back. The R2 dashboard features an astounding cell shade infotainment system, a wonderful mix of materials and textures, thoughtful design details and ergonomics.
Like its current product, the R2 can basically make wireless updates for the car's side, and Rivian says its electrical architecture has been streamlined to provide more functionality with less complexity and provide enough headroom for the future. This car has a 200 spars stop of edge AI calculations, but I'm sure this means something for at least 1 person. With 11 HDR cameras (65MP total) and five radar sensors built into all R2s, the Autonomy+ system can be added at any time after purchase, unlocking a level 3.5 hands-free system on 2 million roads in the United States and Canada. The company didn't say anything specific, but it seems that every other driver assist feature you can think of will be standard. Rivian initially planned to produce the R2 at its new plant in Georgia, but these plans have been postponed to 2028, so it will instead be produced at the company's existing plant in Normal, Illinois.
The company says the regular plant will be expanded to have an annual production capacity of 215,000 units, of which 155,000 could be R2. While the R1 had a fairly slow ramp-up (and still doesn't sell in huge numbers), the R2 should be a different story. As TechCrunch reports, Rivian is gearing up to be one of the fastest EV launches ever, with a target of around 20,000 to 25,000 R2 units sold this year.1You can book R2 on Rivian's website now, but sadly, you'll have to wait a bit for the configurator to get up and running.
