2027 BMW X5 Hybrid and iX5 EV Review: A Bold New Era for BMW’s Iconic SUV

2027 BMW X5 Hybrid and iX5 EV Review: A Bold New Era for BMW’s Iconic SUV

When BMW first introduced the X5 in 1999, it changed the game for the Bavarian carmaker and the industry as a whole. Now, with more than 300 million X5s later, the company is removing the cover from the 5th generation model, and BMW is aiming to rock the game again. The new X5 is also the tech-y hydrogen version with the ix5, inside and outside the Neue Classe design elements, and the same sporty that we have come to expect from BMW's midsize crossover. It's hard to believe that X5 has already existed for 27 years. Each new generation, up to this point, looked a bit like an evolution of design, not a revolution. But in 2027 X5, a lot of revolutions are happening here.

I'll delve into what the 2027 X5 looks like, mainly because the whole Neue Klasse design language really speaks to me. I need to point out that the new X5 X-shaped running lights look like the eyes of cartoon characters, as animators try to tell them that they are dead by putting X's on them. I think the headlights are kind of fun and goofy and may be paying homage to the BMW328 hommage concept, but the straight line of the ix3 headlights seems to be a good thing. Aside from the headlights, the X5's front end looks very similar to the IX3 and just looks crazy. It has the same narrow, upright kidney grille Harken back to Bmw for almost 100 years, the X5 kidney is a bit larger and more square than the ix3 one.

They are flanked by large black spaces on either side, with illuminated contours and trapezoidal headlights pushed to the edges of the fascia. The side view of the X5 is consistent with the appearance of BMW's current Neue Classe. Monolithic is the word I use; it has a square scoop-out on top of the wheel arch to make it look more aggressive than it actually is.The wide side skirt will definitely knock your shins (as I've done so many times), and the BMW's signature Hofmeister kink is on the D-pillar. Other neat features include a hidden window seal that makes flash transitions between paint and glass, and a new "BMW Winglet" touch-sensitive door handle on the B and C pillars that are used to open and close the car's four passenger doors.

There is a fully electric power option that shakes the door open all the way with a light touch, the soft closing comes standard. You may also notice that the wheelbase has been added 2.4 inches so the wheels are pushed a little more into the corner than before, but BMW has not yet said exactly the length of the new X5. As with the front end, the rear is reminiscent of the IX3, with a long and complex taillight, so the X5 looks even wider than it really is. It certainly has a good stance, helped by the shiny black bottom bumper and diffuser section, and what almost seems to be a shelf above the taillights. To ring with the new X5, BMW offers 10 wheel designs between 21 and 23 inches, with 11 exterior colors.

Overall, it's a really great piece of design from the outside if you like what the BMW is cooking like in the second half, but one thing missing It has been a staple of the X5 since it was introduced, but the two-piece tailgate is no more for this 5th generation crossover . BMW has not released exact weight figures, but when it comes to efficiency, it wants to save as much weight as possible, whether it's gas or electricity.  Dropping the electric motor in the lower half of the tailgate, along with everything else you need, saved you weight. These small savings can make a difference. Also, a spokesperson told me that BMW engineers were able to widen the hatch opening of the X5 because the motor and drain in the lower half of the tailgate were removed, and now I can't tell you how much it has improved because we don't have a cargo space number either, but I can't tell you how much it has improved.

The interior of the X5 has gotten the same comprehensive overhaul that the exterior got, especially when it comes to technology. Every Neue Classe-era Bmw (even though this Suv is running on the CLAR platform) gets a Panoramic iDrive setup that runs the company's operating system X. Utilizing a projected panoramic vision display spanning the entire length of the windscreen base, the 17.9-inch diamond-shaped touchscreen stands as the centerpiece of the dashboard, flanked to the right by the am optional 14.6-inch display, and features passenger-focused entertainment features (some of which are available for purchase).

It features all kinds of games (including games). On the left side of the rhombus screen is BMW's funky new steering wheel design, which I think looks good, but also a 3D head-up display all over it in case you need more information than a touch, which guarantees you'll probably hate it. Don't worry, Tech creepy people - If BMW doesn't like pressing screen-based buttons, the center display can be connected to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (because it's really your only option), you can just talk to mind and don't have to worry about jumping in the menu. It is not. Don't worry about getting outdated, as the entire system will remain as up to date as possible with ConnectedDrive over-the-air updates.

Another element that really stood out to me as I poked around the inside of the pre-production X5 was the ambient lighting. BMW has thankfully moved away from its fully illuminated plastic trim, which it introduced in the 5 Series and X3. Overall, the interior of the car has an art Deco look and feel, with a lot of very interesting material choices. Of course, you have your standard woods, leather, metal, plastic, and suedes, but BMW is definitely not a truck company that goes a step further by adding something I've never seen before materials. As standard, the X5 comes with a 280-watt 12-speaker audio system, but I have to appeal to get an optional 775-watt 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins environmental sound system, or everyone is going to think they're bad losers.

A ventilated and massage seat is also available as an option. As with all X5s, there is enough rear seat room for at least two adults, but now there is even more space thanks to the aforementioned increase in the wheelbase. Everything we've explained so far is very well done, but the big news for the 5th generation x5 is definitely its all-electric iX5 variant. It runs on an 800-volt architecture and is a newly developed electric with a bi-directional charge, standard NACS charging port and cylindrical cells for greater energy density than the old ones. So far, BMW, per BMW test, has a 1-charge iX5 with a net usable battery pack of 435-kWh, which BMW says is sufficient in a range of 144-kWh.

With an AC charger, the iX5 can handle 15.4kW of juice. It is a legitimate force as well. The Ix5 60xDrive has 1 motor on each axle, combining 570 horsepower and 593 pound-feet of torque to get a big bruiser from 4.4 to 0mph in just 60 seconds If you keep your feet on it, you'll hit an electronically limited top speed of 130mph. As for the gas-powered X5, things aren't a bit interesting, but that doesn't mean it needs to be ignored. The rear-wheel-drive X5 40 and all-wheel-drive X5 40xDrive are powered by BMW's proven b58 turbocharged 3.0-litre Inline 6, and now feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The power is up with 19 hp and a whopping 46lb-ft of torque, bringing both models to 394 hp and 429lb-ft — that's enough for 5.1 seconds 0-to-60 hours on the RWD model, which is properly specied with the help of its 8-speed automatic transmission and a top speed of 155mph.

Moreover it maintains a nearly 50:50 weight distribution BMW is very famous and has a support system in the car's infotainment system to help you adjust your driving experience. With highway aerodynamics there is an optional air suspension up and down as you see the car's brain fit, which helps with traversing the rough terrain you are sure to encounter in the X5 (up to 1.6 inches when parked). Electric models and PHEV models are available in adaptive chassis Control Professional to stop things from being so bothered at the corners, using a 48 volt electric motor and active anti-roll bar in the center of each axle.  Almost anything you can think of, this SUV is an optional highway that allows hands-free driving on the "proper highway" at speeds of up to 85mph with just a glance at one of your side mirrors, it will change lanes for you.

I know I've thrown you a hell of a lot of information, and all of it still sounds tempting, and if you're a bit wealthy, you'll find the first to launch is the X5 40XDrive, which will feature a base price of base $73,550, including the destination. Then in 2027 Q1 will be followed by the rear drive X5 40 ($71,250), the plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive ($78,950), and the all-electric iX5 60xDrive ($ 81,250). Make no mistake, BMW is taking some big swings right now. Cars like the X3, X5 and 3 series have always been a bit conservative in design, but with the introduction of the Neue Klasse, BMW turned over the neue leaf.  For a car like the X5, which has been constantly evolving since its revolutionary introduction at the end of the last millennium, this is the biggest swing BMW has taken and it's a good thing. It also considers how many powertrain is intended to fit under the hood, and a complete table of where the automotive industry is now with the new X5, there should be something for everyone.
