Volkswagen ID.4 GTX Review: Performance, Range, and Everyday Practicality

Volkswagen ID.4 GTX Review: Performance, Range, and Everyday Practicality

Volkswagen is one of the largest car manufacturers, and some of the models such as Beetle, golf and transporter minivans have gained cult support. There is a lot of excitement about every new model coming from Wolfsburg, as many follow the brand almost religiously. Today we are testing the ID, which is one of Volkswagen's latest additions. This is an electric crossover on the MEB platform used by many vehicles of the Volkswagen Group (VAG). The GTX is the most sporty and most powerful variant that comes with 250kW (340hp) and standard all-wheel drive. Our test car is actually a hybrid between 2 generations and has a facelift drivetrain and, from the outside, has a pre-facelift infotainment though.

Outside the ID.4 is a modern looking with flowing lines and almost no edges. Everything in appearance is smoothed for both style and aerodynamic purposes. Volkswagen made ID.4 looks more like a Hatchback than a crossover. In fact, most models come with a trim under the body color, overlaid with black plastic for a more sturdy look. ID.4 from the front welcome you with rounded shape and "grumpy" look that we really like. It's not too much of a design for your face type, it looks aggressive and regal. The hood is low, with 2 large bulges on both sides, increasing the presence on the road. The Volkswagen logo sits high off the ground and is surrounded by LED strips on both sides for a more menacing profile at night, but we feel it gives off a cheap aftermarket look rather than the futuristic aggressive stuff.

Look at the ID.4GTX from the side, it can easily be mistaken for a hatchback. There is no black plastic on the underside of the car as opposed to a normal ID.4 models. They both look great, but the smaller set offers a slightly higher range and a better ride. Our car had a staggered setup of the Pirelli Scorpion-Elect on the 235/45/20 front and 255/45/20 back. These tires are optimized for an absolute grip rather than a better range of EVs. Volkswagen is jumping on the current industry trend of flash door handles and aced it in terms of design and practicality. The door has a slight opening, which opens with a finger pricking and pressing a button.

In this way, the design remains modern and refined, but you do not have to wait for the electric motor to pop out the handle and freeze in winter. Most modern cars have graphics, or at least lights, to illuminate the vicinity of the vehicle when unlocked, and you'll see what you're stepping on Volkswagen decided to integrate a strange angled graphic that looks like the Renault logo you see every time you approach your car at night. Step back and look at the back of the ID. You can see a huge LED bar that includes a 4GTX rear light and brake light spreading from end to end. Having a cool pixelated design helps to distinguish it from all other vehicles with rear LED bars that have recently come out.

The VW emblem is in the middle of the hatch, and just below it is with the GTX signature, so everyone has the most powerful version you have in existence. The lower part of the rear is cluttered with black plastic that mimics vents and diffusers, but only disrupts the very clean look of the ID.It has entered the 4th month. Inside the ID.4GTX is a spacious cabin with solid build quality. The general layout is easy to understand, without too many futuristic touches and too complex elements. The materials used may have gotten better, but they are well put together and there is nothing rattling or creaking, except for the center screen. The pedal is what you immediately notice when you open the ID door.

Next is the seat, they look great and sit great. They will hug your body well with a large bolster, but Alcantara will prevent you from slipping around. Not only are they sporty, they also provide great comfort and will not tire you on a longer road. The steering wheel features some great and not so great touches. It is nice and small with solid feeling and optional heating function. You can also control multimedia and driver assistance, yet one of the worst ways Volkswagen can go about controlling these buttons has haptic feedback and is actually a button rather than a recurring theme of ID.4. Behind the steering wheel is only the most necessary information, without cool options and flashy graphics like many other manufacturers are currently doing, it shows information about assisted driving, navigation and speedometer, and that's about it.

While gauge clusters are very basic, an optional head-up display device is anything. It projects a huge image on the windshield and provides all kinds of information. Not only does it add augmented reality to your navigation so you won't miss your turn, but it also includes a corner trajectory in front of you, oh this is a really astounding HUD implementation and an important box to check when specifying an ID.4. We move on to the center display, which comes with a 10-inch version for the lower trim, and a 12-inch variant of the GTX we got. Touchscreen response time tried the current one Volkswagen whole for facelift version because just about everyone hates it We are very keen to test the revamped version and get back to you if we get a chance!

In the back there is a lot of headroom and legroom. Our 1.95m (6'4") tall reviewers fit well with a generous amount of space left. You also get very nice optional features such as USB-C vents and climate control with multiple vents for optimized comfort on the back, these are extras, not so many cars in the segment offer and make ID.4GTX stands out. On storage, the ID.4GTX has a lot to offer. It has a box-shaped trunk, 2 large storage areas under the floor of the main trunk, as well as allowing you to make full use of its cargo potential. The rear seats fully fold the flat cargo floor and open a huge storage area with a lot of usable space.

There is also a 12V outlet and an optional tow hitch. Overall, the ID. 4 proves very practical and still offers a lot of storage space inside the cabin and with clever pockets on the trunk even though there is no front trunk. The GTX has a harder suspension than the regular ID.4 models. If you want, you can get an adjustable suspension for different driving modes, but you got a fixed sports suspension. This definitely felt negative for everyday driving, but it was very pleasant on the winding roads and very stable on the highway. This also meant there was no significant change between modes, except for pedal response and power delivery.

ID.4 also comfortably go on a light off-road, its approach and departure angle is great and its wheelbase makes it a good companion for some dirt adventures. The most important drawback is infotainment, which is unnecessarily complex and less responsive. It has serious input lag as well as some menus that don't always work. The fact that Volkswagen was forced to hurry up with a facelift with the sole intention of addressing complaints about infotainment is the reason why this version is so popular. ID.4 cabin is very well insulated and is a truly calm place at low speeds. Our tests tell us a lot more about the attention to detail of the ID.4 than the much more expensive and premium models.

Volkswagen ID.4GTX enters the closely contested segment, continuing to welcome new competitors every week these days. VW is priced somewhere in the middle of it when it comes to pricing and just about all the important performance aspects. It didn't break through the charts or flop dramatically anywhere. One can say that this has been Volkswagen's formula for success over the years, and it's no wonder the company stuck with it.Volkswagen ID.4GTX is an excellent all-purpose car, giving the owner enough. It is a highly practical vehicle and it is very fun to drive. It has enough power to zoom the traffic, even if it is not a truck car. It is a vehicle that accompanies you in your daily routine and provides perfect ease of use in all kinds of situations. ID.4 is largely suppressed by the infotainment system and unnecessary complex controls, most of which will be addressed in the upcoming facelift.
