Volkswagen ID.7 Pro Review: Volkswagen’s Most Comfortable EV Yet

Volkswagen has a long and successful history of serving families and businesses around the world and making reliable and practical sedans. The model we are reviewing today is Volkswagen ID. The only variant currently available for purchase is 7Pro. It provides 286 hp and 545Nm for the rear wheels. The battery pack has a usable capacity of 77kWh, but the Pro S version with a larger 86kWh pack will debut later this year. Thrill seekers are also looking forward to ID.335GTX with all-wheel drive and 7 hp output. Outside the Volkswagen ID.7Pro is usually conservative to the brand and can even be described as bland. ID.7 is certainly not ugly, but it does not really evoke strong emotions with its modest appearance. 

Still, the function on the form is how VW has built its success over the years, and here it is with excellent aerodynamics and the ability to maximize cargo space and passenger room. The front of the ID.7 is very reminiscent of a number of other Volkswagen models like Golf, ID.3 and ID.4. Since the ID.7 is electric It does not require a large center grille and can be done with a small one at the bottom of the bumper, whereas all other surfaces follow the body line to make the front as slippery as possible and reduce drag. A large VW logo is prominently placed in the center, surrounded by an extension of the headlight that acts as an LED bar at night. 

However, it looks as an afterthought, as it naturally follows from the headlights and does not end abruptly near the logo. But the matrix headlights work great and well illuminate the road ahead without blinding the oncoming car. The rear end of the ID.7 Pro makes the car look narrower than it really is, thanks to its sloping black roofline and the chrome-plated trim that surrounds it. When combined with high ground clearance and low mounted rear LED bars, the entire back looks disproportionate, first designed for another car and then stretched to fit this car. ID. 7 is about 10cm narrower than similar models like the Tesla model S and Mercedes EQE, but impressively neither feels particularly spacious inside than the Volkswagen. 

The trunk of the ID.7 actually opens in the rear window and makes the car technically a hatchback. This is due to the sloping roof, which helps when loading larger items. The rear lights are connected like the front headlights, but they are well thought out here and seem to fit the rest of the design features.  Inside, ID.7 is a typical Volkswagen - there is nothing excessive, but overall you can spend time in a comfortable atmosphere. Agree that it is boring, but it offers everything you need with an above-average build and material quality. And in the family sedan segment this is definitely the approach that tha makes the most sense.

The large and thin steering wheel welcomes you with automatic lifting. On it there are audio, cruise controls and controls for settings. The last one has access to only a few options from there, and the buttons themselves are tactile feedback and touch sensitive, finished in piano black, as they need to go to the multimedia screen for a full setup. This means that it is somewhat difficult to operate, but very easy to smudge this is the main point of complaints of Volkswagen models in recent years, and the stems of the sad steering column are well weighted and feel good. On the right side of the steering column there is a start/stop button, which is actually redundant. Press the brake pedal and turn the gear selector to the desired position, and the ID.7 will be displayed. 

Behind the steering wheel is a gauge cluster display that is similar to what other ID models offer, but looks much classier here and the reads on it are small and not descriptive enough. It also gives off a cheap and basic look without cool graphics. On the left side of the steering wheel is a set of capacitive touch buttons that control the lights and the defroster definitely a strange combination. More interesting is the way they work, you have to press them with enough precision and not a lot of power, otherwise they command it is among the worst and most overcomplicated modules of the enterprise that add predictability to the basic features of the operation.

In the center of the ID.7 sits a large 15" infotainment display, which operates most vehicle features. The touchscreen unit is a massive upgrade compared to other ID models we have tested. The larger the size, the more comfortable the whole experience will be, but note that due to the cheap plastic that surrounds the screen, the unit will sound louder screen expansion is a column of capacitive touch buttons that control the temperature and audio volume. When first introduced to VW models, it has no backlight and is difficult to use at night. Now at least they will light up, but still no more convenient than a knob or a normal button. 

The center console has a huge space covered with 2 plastic lids that are flimsy and inexpensive, but under it there are 2 cup holders and 2 USB-C charging ports, as well as wireless charging pads that keep a lot of items safe. Under the console, a medium-sized handbag, a wide opening can even increase convenience. Under the center armrest there is a deep storage pocket that can easily store large water bottles. It also comes with a separator for smaller items that you can move around or decide not to use at all. In front of the passengers in the front row and on the door panels are the most interesting details of the entire interior - ambient lighting. 

ID 7 seats we tested was comfortable and very cooperative. Even though they are finished in Alcantara, they provided heating and ventilation of the seats. The massage feature is also a welcome boost to comfort. The ErgoActive seat offers a fine balance between comfort and stability suting a number of different driving styles. The rear seats offer a generous amount of space and our 6'4" tall reviewers are fitted with lots of space to afford. The seat bottom must be high enough off the floor, forcing your legs to stay in the lifted position caused by the battery pack placing on the bottom of the ID 7. Rear passengers get their own climate control, heated seats and two USB-C chargers as needed.

The door and front seat back provide many storage pockets that are welcome. Everything that the rear passenger touches is finished with great material, with the exception of the piano black finish center console and the rattling when driving, and is well combined. Power delivery is smooth and linear in all modes - you don't get an important punch when flooring the accelerator pedal in sports mode. This results in a gentle driving experience, ideal for the daily commute and family hauling. This formula is the basis of the success of Passat, and I am sure that many will be happy to see the ID.7 hold it. We need to admire the ID.7 Pro so that it communicates with the road in a great way. 

You can feel potholes and always be aware of how much traction you have, but it's not the invasive way you're wrestling with the steering wheel. One cool shortcut for climate control gets selected from a list of specific heating/cooling setups and adjusts all settings at once. Smart climate presets Integrated navigation system is great, with a rich database with the latest map data and charging points. It is well built into the head-up display and provides a nice, deep image that needs to be rotated. The augmented reality feature makes it difficult to miss turns and is really impressive to use its focal length setup fully. The head-up display projects most of the information needed during operation, making small gauge clusters virtually redundant. 

In the center is the speed, on the left is the cruise control settings, and on the right you can choose from the navigation readout or consumption information. One feature that can be used to improve is the camera. It comes with surprisingly low image quality and is almost useless at night. During the day you get a lot of glare and overexposed objects, which is a pity for such modern and advanced vehicles. Small bumps and uneven surfaces are rarely felt, while large potholes and road splices are taken over by drivers and passengers, but ID in a violent way. The 7 is a vehicle that can take long distance journeys easily without tiring your single bit. ID.7 cabin is well insulated from the surrounding world. When at rest or at low speed, there is very little sound from the outside. But as the speed increases, the sound of the wind begins to enter inside. 

Especially at high speeds, there are high-pitched wind swirls that are very noticeable inside, and on longer journeys you will find them exciting. Pro version of ID.7 we tested is not particularly powerful, and with only a single motor its acceleration is decent, but not spectacular. Efficiency is a key element of ID.7. It performs really well for the class and requires a reasonable amount of energy to operate. This means that a 77kWh battery pack can make longer trips, and future larger battery packs will only improve in that range. Tesla wins in terms of power, storage and technology, but the price of Volkswagen and the quality of its better interior make for an interesting alternative.
