Volkswagen Atlas has been a very important car for automakers since it first appeared in the 2018 Model Year, and by 2025 it has sold more than 572,000 cars in the United States alone. Atlas Cross sport accounted for 30% of VW's sales last year, but since the Atlas is in its eighth model year, it's a bit long in the teeth for a while. Fortunately for all the Atlas heads out there, Volkswagen is giving its big crossover a massive overhaul in 2027. Its sophomore project promises more upscale looks, a hell of a lot of standard and "family-friendly" features, and a ton of space for the residents and a lot of their crap thanks to the upgraded platform above all - technology that can run at the best of them.Oh, and the VW engineers, from the GTI-derived EA888 turbocharged Four-Popper, have been working on a new version for all car enthusiasts who have accidentally had some too many kids. As for the first-generation Atlas is concerned it was not a a bad-looking car, but it lacked a bit of the upmarket vibe of VW's previous biggest SUV, the Tuareg. With the second-generation crossover, VW's designers were clearly trying to recapture some of that magic with a stronger belt line, harder angles and a more upright grille. It has more muscular fenders and side skirts, as well as a more prominent spoi behind which now sits on the tailgate, which is flush with the rear bumper, Volkswagen has also added 3 new colors to the Atlas lineup for 2027, which are almost always real colors: Blackberry, Cherry.
I'm sure it will be a really great choice for people to skip before they go with black, white, gray or silver. Of course, there are a lot of modern touches that are prevalent in the automotive industry right now, like LED light bars for the front and back and illuminated VW badges. The new Atlas holds one element that reminds us back to the last atlas, the design of the stacked headlights. Equally modern is the wheel size. VW says all trims except the base cars get new 20 or 21-inch aluminum alloy wheels available in machined or black finishes. Buyers of the base Atlas must purchase an 18-inch rim. Overall, VW's designers are able to make this car look much more upscale than it actually is, and not a family-friendly mini van replacement, but a shape similar to the Porsche Cayenne Electric.
It's certainly not nearly a true luxury car there was a Tuareg, but from the outside, at least, it's a step in the right direction. As with the outside, Volkswagen designers obviously want to put in place some of the less nice things about the current Atlas interior, so the 2027 Atlas has a much more upscale interior. According to VW, every trim has a lot of soft-touch materials, real wood and metal. There are also 4 color options available: Pebble gray, black, dark gray and deep wine. Leatherette is standard for the base car, and the top 2 trims are available in Barena leather and Nappa leather. Most things on the dashboard are placed within a central loop that runs the width of the car and when you ask me, it looks pretty clean.
It assembles a side air conditioning outlet, a funky light LED design thing, and your two screens, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 15-inch center infotainment touchscreen (base vehicle gets a 12.9-inch center screen).Volkswagen has made a brilliant decision to move the car's transmission levers to the steering column, freeing up tons of space on the center console for two oversized cup holders to the right, two wireless charging pads to the front, allowing drivers to control their audio volume. A neat little driver experience dial on the left side, which will allow you to control the function of drive mode and atmosphere. It's basically a fancy ambient lighting system. There are 10 colors to choose from as standard, but the top two trims get 30 and the ambiance function, whatever that ambiance may be, just I think some sort of sound track is done with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system (the base car is done with a 9-speaker setup). 2 trim on through that funky illuminated dashboard panel and add something like the 1st and 2nd row door panels, perforated backlight panel Is it necessary? No.. Is it cool? Sure.
This is standard for all things, even those that the 2027 Atlas can achieve, and the functionality packaged in VW and It is not thrown like a power lift gate, except at a later date, auto dimming driver - side mirror, front and rear also park distance warning from the jump. There is a new front center airbag total, but the VW IQ drive steering support system is not. Volkswagen also added vents to the B-pillar to help with second-row ventilation, and an improved driver's seat with enhanced four-way lumbar support and 12 ways of power adjustment in all models. The panoramic sunroof and 2nd row Captain chair are also available at nearly any trim level.

With the upper trim, the driver gets thigh support and a four-way massage is available in both front seats, which is perfect when your rat ass child has let you down for a million times and you just need to take a break. The automaker has said that Column 3 of the Atlas will remain "generous" because it will work with an upgraded version of the Volkswagen Group's MQB Evo architecture. There are no exact measurements, but according to VW, the new crossover is about 1 inch longer than the old crossover, and the width, wheelbase and height remain the same. That is, the length is about 201.7 inches and the wheelbase is 117.3 inches. You need to wait a little more to see how that extra length affects the internal space.
But it's boring enough. What about power? Raw, invigorating power. Well, it has a little more of it. Atlas's EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-litre In line-4 gives out a heart-stopping 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It's 13 more hp than its predecessor, and VW says it will abolish the mighty VR6 it was offered and become the most powerful atlas ever. However, there is a dip in the torque. It's now down 15 pounds feet on top of the old car. But I do not think there is a single Atlas buyer who will notice. What they notice is the fact that it is supposed to get better fuel economy than before, and its towing capacity does not change even the payload trailer hitch installed in the factory.
Volkswagen has not yet cited performance indicators, but says that the 2027 Atlas will come standard with front-wheel drive and 4 Motion all-wheel drive is an option. Both setups receive power through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Hybrids may even come, but in order to get that bad boy, you have to wait a few years later for a refresh of the intermediate cycle. For the time being it is all we know. More information regarding Volkswagen says more information, regarding specifications, trim failures and pricing, will be announced very soon or when the car is near to launch in the market.
