2026 Toyota RAV4 Review: Hybrid Performance Meets Everyday Practicality

2026 Toyota RAV4 Review: Hybrid Performance Meets Everyday Practicality

Since 2017, the Toyota RAV4 is the best-selling non-truck in America and is revered for its reliability and nonsense appeal. Now with its sixth generation and boasting a comprehensive upgrade in and out, I'm sure the RAV4 is better than ever. It's spacious and comfortable, and because it's only available as a hybrid now it requires very few stops at the pump while munching miles. The screen is a massive step up from the old version. And it's one of the most ergonomically classified cars I've ever driven. After testing for a week, I'm happy to report that the new RAV4 feels like the default answer to the question right now: "What should I buy?".

I scratched my head trying to find shortcomings, and I chose a few things that I would emphasize throughout this story. But in the age of 6 dollar gas in some parts of the country, the new RAV4 feels timely and sensible for those who are not yet ready to switch to EVs. The design evolution of the RAV4 is more predictable than radical, with Toyota taking over the same design language as the latest camry. It was dangerous to ruin a car that sold about 50 million cars in the United States alone last year. .At The dimensions of 181 inches long, 73 inches wide and 66.5 inches high are almost identical to the previous generation, with the exception of Woodland and GR Sport, which differ slightly due to trim-specific cosmetic changes. The overall stance has changed meaningfully.

The proportions became more upright and more like an SUV. It looks more confident, more purposeful and more mature.Inside, there's nothing that looks or feels like an old RAV4. The limited variant has a Softex-trimmed, hot and ventilated front seat that felt soft and comfortable but lacked adequate side enhancement, so you expect side movement around the twistier path. The center console is a functional design of packaging, and all you need is nothing but packing is not.The drive mode button, gear selector, volume knob, the hand will naturally fall into place, and a sense of luxury gunmetal finish has become.

You have two wireless charging pads, it's from the bottom of the storage cubby, dual 45W USB-C port, twin Cup holder and armrest deep below the video gets. Every feature is instinct, but it should be said that I was exactly in place and the menu is behind in essence there was nothing. Hundreds of thousands of families and a myriad of ride share driver for the daily driver that serves as the vehicle for this intuition is welcome. However, the interior of the big highlights is the gauge cluster and infotainment setup. The digital experience of the RAV4 is finally coming of age with its new 12.9-inch tablet-like infotainment screen (10.5 inches with lower trim) and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

The RAV4 will also debut Toyota's latest Arene software-defined vehicle platform, which Toyota also plans to roll out to future models. To be clear, the user interface here isn't as advanced as the one you'll find on Tesla and Libian EVs. But it's still a big step forward from the current Toyota's sticky and cluttered gauge clusters and infotainment displays, offering a more smartphone-like user interface and much more customization. Switching the touch menu using the remote control on the steering wheel now greatly simplifies and improves daily use. The central touchscreen is clear and responsive, and wireless audio and audio systems are available as standard.

For the first time, it includes a car's front and rear cameras, as well as a linear camera that uses "blind spots" to record movement. It supports continuous recording, automatically saves the clip when an event is detected, and allows you to upload videos via ouj. You can also manually capture a 20-second clip if you want. It is a useful addition to make the aftermarket dash cam unit unnecessary. But drive recorders continued to flag "driving incidents" for moments that felt completely routine and inconspicuous. It's a bit of a nuisance that Toyota could iron out with a software update. At this point, alongside the "efficiency of Toyota hybrid cars" the absolute of the inevitable of life as one of death and tax.

But the new RAV4 turned out to be more efficient than the other Toyota hybrids I drove. There is a road-trip force on the punch and its weight in a small crossover. Like, Toyota sells plug-in hybrid version of "RAV4." It is also tested on the standard hybrid type of the lineup of pc volume of goods. My press lent me a whole tank of fuel — 14.5 gallons and an estimated range of nearly 600 miles. It has an EPA-rated combined efficiency rating of 41 miles per gallon. I observed a combined rating of 47mpg and a rating of only cities up to 56mpg bordering the plug-in hybrid territory. It is paired to 2 electric motors and a compact 1.0kWh lithium-ion battery. The third e-motor, with the addition of AWD trim, grips for the rear axle.

The first e-motor acts as a generator, collecting energy from the gas engine to replenish the battery, doubling as a starter motor and waking the car in almost complete silence, like an EV. The second motor drives the front wheel and steps below the hard acceleration to recover kinetic energy during inertia, rotation, braking and feeding, and the battery is said to have entered the era of undoing. Like other hybrids, Rav4 can also run on pure electricity at low speed for a short distance, when the battery has enough charge. And, importantly, its efficiency does not come at the expense of performance. The 236 hp AWD powertrain has enough grunt for daily driving and confident highway overtaking.

Better yet, unlike Crown Signia or Corolla Cross hybrids, the RAV4 punishes you with rough and tense engine notes when you put your feet down, of course, you still feel the rubber band effect from the e-CVT, but the cabin is much better off from those noises. It is certainly more sophisticated than before. The RAV4 now features reinforced suspension mounting points and frame joints for improved handling and ride comfort. Toyota said there is also a high damping adhesive to reduce micro-vibration and road noise.  It jumps prominently under braking, squats over acceleration, and has a certain conceit quality that makes it feel bigger than it actually is. The steering felt the right light from low to high speed until the weighted piling up of the speed cancer will pick you up and touch more directness to cope.

The GR Sport trim feels more dialed when compared, but it was also less fun to drive based on tests earlier this year. With a starting price of starting31,900 before destination rates, the new RAV4 will be 1,000 cheaper than the outgoing base hybrid and about 2 2,100 more than the old base gas-only trim. It is remarkable value for a comprehensively improved car. Even the entry-level LE is equipped right out of the box with a new digital gauge cluster, phone mirroring, and dual zone climate control. Adding a well-equipped cabin and its excellent hybrid efficiency makes the value proposition difficult to discuss. The competition is also quite strong.

Tucson and the CR-V are still waiting for a generation update, so they're naturally taking a step behind the new car.I want to avoid the bloated limited trim I tested. Options such as head-up displays, crossbars and premium floor mats come with destination3,500, but with destination47,000 including destinations, the math of this trim is not the best. LE, SE, and XSE are sweet spots, and they make little or no compromises about the features that really matter.
