New Audi RS5 Turns Heads With Its Shockingly Powerful Plug-In Hybrid V6

I'm sure you've already seen the leaked images of the new Audi RS5 (it wasn't our fault!). So I'm going to jump into it. The new Audi RS5 clearly for now only in the form of European specifications, what we get in the US will be essentially the same - aside, we will probably be able to get the same. These two new RS5 are the first Audi sports car to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and it sounds like a doozy, combining the old car's twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor for a total of 630 hp. That's even more than RS6's V8. It also has an electrical range of over 50 miles at the rear, an advanced suspension setup and the industry's first electromechanical torque vectoring system.

Audi promises its exhaust, too, "emphasizes all throttle inputs with a rich, full-bodied sound". Even the RS5 itself seems shocked by the performance and technology it has. Audi's definitely took its single frame grille to a new extreme here, giving a large air curtain with a noticeable honey comb pattern on either end of the RS5. Apart from the awkward sensor integration a common Audi problem these days. I actually really like the front end. The RS5 in the Audi press photo has black or carbon bumper inserts, but if either would be an option, I'd like to see what it looks like in body color or silver. Audi says that the package with a black appearance is the standard, but this is a pity.

Audi widens each fender by more than an inch and a half and it has some of the best boxy flares we've maybe ever seen from an Audi production car, plus actual vents behind the front wheels similar to the RS3 .Unlike the BMW M3, the RS5 rear door is new to a better flow on a wider hanch, and it looks just great from every angle. The rear diffuser is very ridiculous, with a technical design and a pair of giant oval exhaust tips. The trunk lid of the sedan has a bit of a spoiler, while the Avant has a bit of a distinct spoiler at the tailgate. Sure, it sucks that we probably don't get a wagon, but I think the RS5 liftback looks really damn good. 285/35 20-inch wheels with tires are standard, but you can choose nearly bronze 21-inch forged wheels.

There are nine color options to choose from, including "attractive effect colors" such as Merlin Pearl effect, Goodwood Green, Panther Black Crystal effect." Certainly Audi's exclusive division will be able to do whatever custom specs you want, too.Two of my favorite details are the checkered flag motif on the headlights and taillights, and the checkered flag CHMSL reflecting on the Avant's rear glass. Okay, I know you want to hear more about the powertrain under the hood, there's an improved version of the same twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 used in the old RS4 and RS5 horsepower (an increase of 59 horsepower) and 443 lb-ft torque torque converter 8-speed automatic torque converter.

Inside the transmission is an electric motor that produces 175 horsepower and 339lb-ft, which replaces the 12-volt starter motor and consists of a 25.9kWh battery pack mounted above the rear axle under the trunk floor. The total system output is 630 hp and 608lb-ft and of course goes to all 4 wheels via Quattro all-wheel drive.  Audi claims that the RS5 will accelerate from 62mph in 3.6 seconds to 0mph, and from RS6 to 1 in tens of minutes, reaching a top speed of 177mph. The boost button on the steering wheel activates full power for 10 seconds, it also works in electric mode, instantly turns on the engine and opens the exhaust valve. In the European cycle, the city runs only up to 54 miles of power, and the battery capacity can reach 11kW, which can reach 100% in 2 and a half hours.

In the most sporty driving mode, the car always maintains the battery charge at 90% to provide maximum power. There is a new battery temperature control system that uses pumps, fans and heat exchangers to maintain 68 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure stable operation. A high friction axle differential is installed between the front axle and the rear axle, which can change the torque from 70/30 to 15/85 and provides preload to ensure the axle grip even without torque. This reduces understeer and improves steering responsiveness. Especially in the mid corners, when the throttle is turned off and the weight is shifting, it helps the torque to be transmitted to the wheel faster.

The suspension of the RS5 has been adjusted to make sure that it can handle the most extreme road surfaces and conditions with a hydro pulse system with a new twin-valve shock absorber that controls compression and rebound separately. The front axle has new joints, links and rubber bushings, and the rear axle is a clean seat design required by the dtc system, and has elastic deformation to ensure that the tire is always in contact with the road. Audi is standard with a brake-by-wire system, where the steering ratio is more direct than the RS5 and reacts well to small inputs, and even though the sedan weighs 5,192 pounds, the car feels faster at the foot Steel brakes use primarily regenerative brakes until more braking force is required.

A larger carbon ceramic brake is optional, and uses a carbon disc at the rear to stop the car from 62mph at 100 feet. You will even be able to adjust the amount of reproduction in three different stages. Oh, I have not mentioned the interior yet. It is not so exciting to talk here. You get an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch touch screen placed in the same environment, and a 10.9-inch passenger screen is standard. Gauge clusters and infotainment have an RS-specific design, many performance pages, and an optional head-up display with boot control guides, shift indicators, and more.

The sports seat looks very supportive, and I can choose from 5 different interior design packages with flat top and flat bottom and new steering contrasting stitching, seat belts and other color accents that have real control knobs. The Audi Sport package features different front and rear bumper designs, Bedford green metallic paint, bronze brake calipers, diamond-cut wheels, serpentine green and brass interior accents. With the Audi Sport package, you can add a carbon camouflage package that adds a lot of forged carbon trim. Both versions of RS5 will be available  in Europe this quarter and will start shipping in the summer.

The price varies according to location as in Germany price is 106,200 euros  of the sedan which is around $125,000 USA. It's unclear if these prices include VAT,  but it's still significantly higher than the outgoing RS4 and RS5 prices. I expect the starting price in the US to be just about around $90,000-100, 000, about 10 or 20 grand more than the old car.
