Boxy, Practical, and Smarter Than Ever: Meet the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB EV and Hybrid

Boxy, Practical, and Smarter Than Ever: Meet the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB EV and Hybrid

GLB Mercedes-Benz is a very important car for the brand and it is  sitting side by side with CLA and GLA 1. But unlike those 2 cars, it really got a few things that make it stand out: its boxy styling and the fact that it somehow seats 7 people. GLB is the entrance to the brand for many customers, and Mercedes knows this. It knows that if someone comes back and wants a spring for a bigger and more expensive model the next time, they need to make a good first impression. So when it was time to redesign the GLB for the 2nd generation, Mercedes did not want to spoil the proven formula too much. Sure, it shares the new powertrain of its sedan under the hood, including two full electric options and a new hybrid four-cylinder ride on the same new MMA platform as the third generation CLA, but visually the car does not take too much risk inside or outside.

If you ask me, it's good because GLB has always been a cute thing. Boxy cars are so hot right now, and cars that can combine boxy and cute are all better for it. The first GLB did it, and now the 2nd GLB is trying to inherit the family tradition. It must also make up for a bit of Rush work, which was the electric version of EQB, the first generation GLB. After all, the car was not a dedicated EV, so it was a compromised package from the beginning. Like most automakers, Mercedes is all about the diversification of powertrain these days, and it's no different from the GLB. If power is what you crave, hop up to the GLB4, which has 349 horsepower and 380 motors that send 2lb-ft of torque to all of the wheels on the GLB350 4MATIC AWD models drop 0-60 hours to 5.4 seconds.

But the electrically limited top speed remains the same at 130mph, and you'll be able to get the most out of it. The GLB350 ranges from 324 to 381 miles in a WLTP cycle. The rear motor of both electric GLBs has a two-speed transmission for better high speed efficiency and low speed acceleration. Now Mercedes-Benz offers three flavors of electric EQB in the United States: Eqb250+, EQB300 4matic and EQB350 4matic. They're giving out 188, 225 and 288 horsepower, respectively, so it looks like they're getting quite a boost of power in the new electric GLB from the cars that replace it. Mercedes says the car can add up to 10WLTP rated miles of range in about 162 minutes of charging.

Of course, the electric GLB has multiple levels of regenerative braking at both trim levels, as well as an optional driver that keeps you out of trouble, in your lane. But I don't want the gas-filled readers to worry. Mercedes also plans to introduce the hybrid GLB a bit after the car's launch, as they know that not everyone is ready to switch to electricity. If you know anything about Mercedes' latest compact car, I'm sure you won't be surprised to learn that the interior of the redone GLB looks exactly the same as the new CLA, at least when you're sitting in the front seat. Its door panels, a floating center console and a dashboard with a 2-screen or 3-screen setup are basically the same as what we first saw in a small electric sedan.

These screens are part of the new Superscreen setup that the automaker is touting, and while they're not as smooth as the seamless units seen in the upcoming GLC EV, they're still pretty cool. Here are a 10.25-inch screen that acts as a digital gauge cluster, a 14-inch touchscreen display that acts as the main infotainment system in the center, and then an optional 14-inch passenger display on the far right. If the passenger's screen does not appear, there is a trim panel with ambient lighting. I haven't been able to poke around much, but it should work the same way as CLA's system, so it would be very good and easy to use. The whole is powered by Benz's new MB.

Have you ever been a super user of the OS that can primarily listen to what you say and do all of the voice control and configuration you could want with an AI assistant? You also get the same ambient lighting setup, air vent control and button layout as the CLA. The steering wheel is also carry-over, and it is very similar to other recent Mercedes-Benz models, but the automaker has added back to a couple physical controls, like a volume knob. If you're the type of person who enjoys good sound quality, Mercedes has a Dolby Atmos, which you're sure to make a (relatively) small GLB sound very nice, covered with an 850-watt 16-speaker Burmester3D surround sound system.

Mercedes says the new car will have more space inside, thanks to a modified roofline and a standard panoramic roof hatch. With folded 3. In order of the trunk, the GLB will be 17 cubic feet higher. With a 5-seat model, it increases to 19.1. If that's not enough, put some of the garbage in a 4.5 cubic foot container or dispose of the 2nd row seat. That 2nd row seat is also mounted on the slider and the rear door opens wide so you can get into the 3rd row something you absolutely don't want for adult GLB passengers.  To be fair, even Mercedes admits that no person over 5'5 should sit there. In any case, the 2nd row passenger has added 2.4 inches of foot space, which has made a lot possible in a car as small as the GLB.

The new GLB does a good job of updating the cute, boxy look of the current car, but does not lose what made the design such a winner among buyers. As with all new Mercedes-Benz models, the electric GLB, which has dozens of illuminated stars on the outside of this car, especially on the grille, has about 600 million 3 pointed stars, and the headlights and taillights also have stars to help distract from the mustache light bar effect on the handlebar, which is happening both in the front and rear. The car is longer than before, but in order to maintain a cube-like appearance, designers use eye tricks like trim pieces under shiny black, the car also has the same flash-mounted door handles as the rest of the Mercedes lineup (now with a better mechanical feel), as well as a more compact design.

Visually, it is very difficult to distinguish between electric and gas-powered Glb. Other than a grille with an open intake (and a physical star in the mesh instead of lights) and several other slightly different fascia elements, the 2 cars are virtually identical. It's a far cry from when Mercedes was running 2 parallel vehicle programs for gas and EV cars, which occupied the same segment. It will take a little while for the 2nd generation Glb to be seen in the U.S. - I'm talking about 1 year from now, next winter, and it's expected that electric-gas cars will come out after EVs in early 2027.

There may be a rise in EV buyers. Maybe that market has completely collapsed. Maybe Donald Trump will ban all imported cars, or automakers will sell all mini cars. It's impossible to say, but you can rely on the idea that boxy will still be stylish. The GLB is not the only small and cute boxy SUV that Mercedes is working on. Soon, perhaps next year, the Three-Pointed Star will reveal a new little G-Wagen model, described as both "Little G" and "Baby G".
